Wednesday, the boys and I were outside trimming our tree in the crazy wind. After one particular gust, I heard a grackle go crazy and start flying all over our yard and the boys. I chased it off and went back to trimming. After a few minutes though, I noticed a nest on the ground and shortly after 3 little baby birds laying on the ground. One of the three did not look good...it obviously had a broken wing, probably from the fall. The other two were fine but looked completely vulnerable. The boys were really interested in them and wanted to "play" with them. We grabbed some gloves, picked up the nest and put all 3 birds back in the nest. Then we tried to find a safe spot to put the nest back in the tree. The problem is, the safest places to shield the nest from another fall are near the bottom...closest to our stupid neighborhood cats. We shoved the nest in and hoped for the best.Today I was working at the computer and heard the birds outside going crazy. I immediately thought there was probably a cat lurking around the tree. I went outside and sure enough it was the same cat that likes to poop in our yard. I threw all kinds of stuff at it and it ran off. I checked on the nest and found there are just 2 little ones and a horrible smell. I don't think the little one with a broken wing made it and the smell probably brought the cat to the nest. I was grateful the parents still were taking care of the two little ones that survived the fall.
It's been fun for the boys to watch the little ones and we're hoping they will survive the cats now.
Sunday Morning Update: Some cats got into the nest during the night Sat night/Sun morning...lesson finished. :(
